The joy of paddling…

Two things gave me an exquisite sense of joy today … the first led to an audible, pleasurable moan…

“What?!”  – Tom is not used to unprompted expressions of delight – he sounded concerned, almost alarmed…

“Oh that was so wonderful!!”

“What?!”

“My tooth suddenly stopped hurting just at the moment a hot flush subsided – I am without pain and the right temperature – it’s blissful!!”

And then later, in the Bishop’s Garden in Norwich … another exquisite moment of joy, and this time not due to the absence of things unwelcome … but one of the those precious times when life just seems so perfect it is palpable …

We had gone to a Samaritan’s fund raising event – and whilst in the tea room the heavens opened – a skylight in the tearoom roof became almost opaque with the lashing torrential rain, and lightening, and then thunder, raged above us…

“Shall we go out?”

The place was becoming packed as people came in from the garden to take refuge – many of them soaked…

I wasn’t used to this side of my husband – it is usually me who suggests daft things…

“Shall we go out?”

So we picked up our umbrella and I slipped my arm in his and we bunched up tight so as to get maximum protection and launched ourselves out into the rain…

I was expecting to get wet from the sky, from the rain lashing sideways under the umbrella – what I hadn’t bargained for was stepping into a river…

As the water tumbled out of the sky and hit the shingle drive it collected and created a teeming waterway that came right over the top of my flip flops … it was wonderful …

We paddled for a while – the cool water eventually feeling almost warm as my feet acclimatised … it was just delicious! All thoughts of my tooth … all thoughts of being a grown up … just melted away … and I became ageless with joy washing over my feet and joy tumbling out of the sky all around me…

We stood for about 20 minutes under the umbrella,  resting our bodies against each other … nestling … and it was bliss … the freshness of the rain … the beauty of the wet glistening foliage around us … just mesmerised and in love with everything … and each other … one of those times that I will remember forever …
